Van Earthquake Fund Interim Report

On October 23, 2011, Turkey's eastern province Van was hit by a devastating earthquake. Responding quickly to this emergency, Florida Turkish American Association (FTAA) created the Van Earthquake Relief Fund, promising that 100% of your tax-deductible contributions to this Fund will be transferred to local organizations that directly help victims of the October 23 disaster. Thanks to your generosity.

But we did not do this alone! Several prominent Turkish American organizations across the United States also mobilized their immediate communities to channel their donations through TPF. We are touched by how quickly and how generously these entities responded. We want to thank Assembly of Turkish-American Association, Turkish-American Chamber of Commerce, Turkish-American Business Forum, Turkish American Cultural Association of Michigan, Turkish-American Association of Arizona, Turkish-American Association of California, Turkish-American Cultural Association of Washington, American Turkish Association Houston, Turkish American Student Association, Turkish American Association of Minnesota, and Turkish-American Ladies League for supporting FTAA's Van Earthquake Relief Fund.

Special thanks also go to our friends at GlobalGiving, who are doing a tremendous job in raising funds for the Van Earthquake. We are happy to note they have entrusted FTAA with disbursing a portion of these funds.

As previously announced, we will disburse the funds first to AKUT and Kizilay. Van is a city that was already dealing with hard economic conditions before the earthquake. The region's recovery will not be swift. With this in mind, FTAA is working to gauge the long-term needs of those affected by the disaster with the goal of supporting projects that will contribute to longer term recovery and re-building of the communities. We are in discussions with several local NGOs and will keep you updated as the projects are selected. As long as individuals, corporations and foundations show interest in supporting the longer term recovery and reconstruction process in Van, FTAA will keep the Van Earthquake Relief Fund open for contributions.
