SHORT BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Oktay Eksi

Hon. Oktay Eksi is a renowned journalist and a member of the Turkish Parliament from the Republican People's Party (CHP). He has long been an eloquent champion of democracy, secularism and modernism, evident in the wealth of his achievements. He has held numerous prestigious positions prior to his election as a member of the Parliament, among these: an immensely influential columnist; former general manager of Hürriyet News Daily; chairman and member of the Turkish Press Council; former vice chairman and founding member, and later president of the World Association of Press
Councils (WAPC); founding chairman of the Basin Enstitüsü
Dernegii (National Committee of nternational Press Institute).

Hon. Eksi holds a degree in journalism from Ankara University and an Honorary Doctorate from Istanbul University. He is also the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Middle East Technical University. When the current Prime Minister took one of his articles as an insult in 2010, Mr. Eksi resigned from Hürriyet, ran for a seat in the Parliament (from the opposition party, CHP) and easily won.
